#11 The Jack Daniels World Championships, Lynchburg, Tennessee - October 2004
44th place overall / 62 teams
The "JD". Just saying "World Championships" gave us the chills, and our main goals going in were to have fun and NOT to come in last place. We achieved both goals, and really had the time of our lives. From the personal guided tour of the distillery to the seriousness of the cookoff, it was an honor. The parade of teams was a blast, and once again we met some of the finest folks on the planet! We turned in some fantastic BBQ (some of the best ever) but with the stiff competition you had to turn to the second page of the score sheet to find us in most of the categories! The icing on the cake was the final category to be called....the elusive Beef Brisket! Well, the Dizzy Pig team picked up a 6th place ribbon in the toughest category to cook. Our 165.7140 points was just four ten-thousandths of a point out of Fifth, and only 2.5 points from a first place win!!

The Jack Daniels World BBQ Championships
The last weekend in October found the boys breaking out rain boots and bales of hay as a huge downpour had flooded the 'hollar' in Lynchburg, TN where the Jack Daniel's World Invitational BBQ Championships was to be held. Once the area was sopped up with hay and exposure to some sun and wind, the Dizzy Pig BBQ Team set about making one last appearance on the competition circuit for 2004. With hopes high and buoyed by their success at the American Royal 'Open', the Dizzy Pig team was a relaxed and ready outfit when it came time to compete. Following the Friday night parade and meet-and-greet at the Jack Daniel's reception center, the team got down to seriously fun business and produced what they all agreed was perhaps their best all-around barbecue to date.
Unfortunately, when you start competing among the 'best-of-the-best', sometimes even your finest just doesn't measure up. That proved to be the case in Lynchburg as the Dizzy Piggers had to be happy with their 6th place ribbon for brisket as the only tangible proof of the fine barbecue they had cooked together that weekend. In spite of a general letdown over their 44th place finish at the event, the team enjoyed meeting many more of their fellow cookers from across the US and the World, fellow Big Green Egg owners and also spending time with the Big Green Egg reps who were working hard in providing high-profile visibility for the Egg at the event. Congrats and thanks to Jim Nufer and his team for their success in promoting the BGE during the event.
The Royal and 'The Jack' were the last two events for 2004, but plans are already underway for 2005. Look for an itinerary of events and some words and pictures for these new events as they happen!
Nature Boy, Qfan, Woodoggies, Hatch and BB want to thank everyone who helped, assisted, encouraged, rewarded, pushed, prodded, fed and watered us on the bbq trail! Many, many thanks!
