#13 Smokin' on the Chesapeake, KCBS Maryland State Championship, Westminster, Maryland - June 2005

The BBQ Road Show. Smokin' on the Chesapeake. This turned out to be a nice contest, but the smallest we have cooked yet. On the beautiful grounds of the Farm Museum in the rolling hills of Westminster, MD we set up our eggs and got cooking! Beautiful weather, and cool for June, temps were in the 70s daytime and the low 50s at night. The crowd was modest on Saturday, but there were quite a few people attending on Father's Day. The eggs and the rubs were quite a draw, and we had a real enjoyable time cooking next to our friend Andrew on Sweetgum Hollow. He was fourth overall in his first KCBS contest. Congrats to Cool Smoke, Porkitects, Dirty Dick, Sweetgum Hollow and Pork and Deans for taking the top 5 spots overall!

Smokin' on the Chesapeake, Maryland State BBQ Championship

We came back to defend our title, but 'twas not to be! Happily, we hand over our crown to this year's champion Cool Smoke!! Tuffy is a great guy, and drags a gorgeous Jamie Greer custom competition smoker. We've never cooked against tuffy before, and obviously this feller knows how to cook! Big congrats Tuffy! Also to the Porkitects for their reserve grand award. Another highlight for us was seeing our friend Andrew, cooking solo as Sweetgum Hollow, come away with a strong 4th overall in his first KCBS contest!

Kenny does some work punching some holes in the back of the clock with a hot Lawn Ranger BBQ pigtail flipper. So we could hang it. A cold front had just came through, and we enjoyed a cool crisp mid June day. Got down in the 40s at night!
The evening was perfect weatherwise, and we were among good friends. What a bunch of fun. The Tiki bar is open.
A couple good friends from Maryland stopped out, and we enjoyed an amazing clear crisp evening around camp. Awoke to a beautiful Saturday morning. Judging not until Sunday, so we just had to wait for our meat inspection.
Dirty Dicks Legless Wonders is one of the top New England teams, and always good to see these guys. Kenny and John get to work on modifying our round table into a lower party table!
John pumps some magic nektar into the brisket. Chris Lane helped us out by explaining the Big Green Eggs to the public, and keeping folks out of our way.
Friend and cooking neighbors, Sweet Gumm Hollow mix up some "Yellow Mangry" sauce. Kenny checks the progress.
Andy gets ready to load up his Caldera smoker. Always a fun guy to hang with, Shotgun Fred fires up some charcoal brewed coffee.
G'mornin sunshine biscuits!!! The ribs are on!
Fat Tommy's BBQ. Good guys from Maryland. Good neighbors to have. Endless smoothies, fries, and deep fried cheesecake!
Chris and John pull off the brisket. The War Pigs. Another team that have become good friends of the Dizzy guys.
Woo Doggies on the lettuce! Our neighbors (the cheescake/smoothie folks) spent some good time with us. Enjoying a sip of tequila in Dad's lucky rocking chair.
Andy and Noah spend a little time in "the chair". Kenny's brother Scott enjoys some quality time with daughter Grace.
John puts the finishing touches on our chicken box. Dang, the ribs look fantastic.
Kenny doing his thang with the knife. Friends Mark and Max came to hang after the judging, and gave us the scoop on the food they ate.
