We heard a rumor about this "Snowshoe" contest earlier in the summer, and the first thing Nature Boy thought of was MOUNTAINS! We do a lot of backpacking out this way, and would never miss a contest up in beautiful West Virginia. The contest did not disappoint. For a first time contest things were run very well. The organizers were very much in tune with the teams' needs, and also seemed very interested in knowing how they can improve for next year. Unfortunately, since it was a first time event, only 8 teams registered and got to experience this wonderful contest, but they all seemed to have a blast! It came down to a half a point, but Dizzy Pig was able to cap off a dream season with yet another Grand Championship! Don't miss this great event in 2006. I think it will be even better the second time!

Snowshoe Blues and Brews BBQ Cookoff, West Virginia State BBQ Championship

It was great to win, but the high point for us was the comradery among the teams. Ken and the boys from Hoss's, John and the fellas from Pigs on the Run, Bill and his wonderful group, Fran and Judy the Frypans, Andy of Sweetgum hollow, and the super friendly folks from At Ease Moonlighters and Wild Bill BBQ! Or maybe the high point was being up at dang near 5000 feet in the mountains. We'll be back. Big congrats to Pigs on the run for almost winning it all.

Where the rivers begin, Snowshoe is in the heart of the Alleghenies in beautiful West Virginia. Hard NOT to stop for views. This is God's country.
The scenery will take your breath away, and all of the sudden the drive out there aint so bad! Not only gorgeous, but ever-changing.
You go through a few different ecosystems to get up into the Snowshoe Resort, on top of the mountain. Chris drove out and set up camp by himself, as our limited team was not able to make it out until early Saturday morning. Chris enjoyed the views and the company while prepping and starting the meat.
A very short stroll and you are right in Snowshoe Village. Some neat specialty shops, bars and restaurants. Our site was tucked in right against some condos, but was relatively flat and comfy.
Kenn Hess, of Hoss's BBQ is a good friend, and happened to be set up real close. A chef at the Greenbriar, Ken demonstrates his onion dicing technique. Ken cooks on a pit he built using stainless dairy farm equipment. Very cool.
One great treat of this contest is a 50 yard walk to the West side and some pretty nice views of the sunset can be had. The weather changes quick up on the mountain. Saturday morning found us within a pretty persistent cloud. It burned off in the late morning for another great day.
Next door, our buddy Andy of Sweetgum Hollow cooks his tail off on just what he brings in ihis Subaru. All by himself. Bills Grill is a great group of folks. Fun people and fantastic cooks.
We got to spend a good amount of time with the Frying Pan team. Fran and Judy are as good as they come. Pigs on the Run is a fun team from Virginia. They can also cook up a storm, and missed winning this contest by a mere half point! And they had more fun than anyone.
Andy and Mark get some chill-out time in. Kenny and Mark pour a round of sippin' tequila for some loosening up before the turn ins!
The turn in area was a long, long walk. Mark ran boxes for both our team and Sweetgum Hollow. Andy was cooking solo and needed a runner. This worked out fantastic. Kenny and Mark feelin the pressure as they take the ribs off for the final presentation.
Mark displays the goods with a smile. Kenny, Mark, andy and Ken celebrate the completion of the turn ins!!
Getting set for the awards with one of my favorite brews....a Sierra Nevada Porter. Ken gets pumped up after nailing a first place in the dessert category.
The Dizzy Pig team ended up with one of the coolest trophies ever. A big bone mounted to a plaque. Cool. Packed up and rolling out of town after a great weekend.
The ride home provides even more great scenery. Ahhh.
