It is always interesting to compete in a first time contest. There are usually some bugs to work out, and it is a learning experience for organizers and cooks alike. This first time contest had an amazing 60 teams competing, including many of the best teams in the country...Smokin' Triggers, ButtRub.com, Jerry King, BarBQuau to mention just a few. The weather could have been worse, but it was chilly and cloudy with a biting steady wind. All in all it was a great weekend, and the Canadian Dizzy Pig contingent (Mike and Brian) was there to enjoy the weekend with us. While we hoped for a little better start this year, it was great to test our product on Carolina judges for the first time. Quite a challenge cooking for their unique tastes, and it was nice to get some cobwebs out for the start of the season!

Smoke at The Rock BBQ Cookoff, North Carolina State BBQ Championship

Good barbecue, dragsters and jet powered trucks. Smoke at The Rock was all it was hyped to be, and more. 60 teams battled for monster trophies and thousands of dollars on this chilly weekend. Dizzy Pig finished a respectable 21st overall in our first Carolina competition with highlights being our 3rd place Anything But....where Mike and Kenny teamed up to make a pork tenderloin/scallop combo. Also notable was our 7th place award for pork. What a fantastic weekend. Congrats to Byron and his ButtRub.com team for taking his second grand championship in 2 tries, and to Tuffy and the guys of Cool Smoke for their big showing as Reserve Grand Champs!

A trip South on I-95 brought us past the booming Richmond area. With trailer graphics that Chris designed, Candy and the BBQers Delight team dropped off their trailer and checked into a hotel. Still pretty quiet around here!
We backed in next to good friends Matt and Chip of War Pigs. Not long after we set up, it is time for some treats. Fine whiskey and a dry aged prime rib roast!
Mike, BBQFan1, drove down from Canada to give us a hand and spend some time together. Mike, Bobby, Brian and Andy check out a little drag racing.
Smoke 'em up! Our neighbors, the War Pigs get the fire burning in their Lang pit.
Chris always feel better once the briskets get cookin. Time to close 'er up! Mike explains the virtues of the Big Green Egg to an interested and enthusiastic future egger.
The cooks meeting gets going on Friday evening. Kenny slices the pork tenderloin that went into the 3rd place Anything But turn in bo.
Saturday early morning at The Rock. As the sun comes up on the row of RVs that house the heavy hitters.
Everything is cooking away nicely. As the morning rolls on, things start heating up. The War Pig team hustles around.
This pork shoulder is lookin about right. Mike, Tuffy and Andy get caught up and relieve some pre-turn in stress!
Brian helped out Andy and the Sweetgum Hollow team. Here he is excelling at his towel beeoch duties! Chris and the 49th place chicken!! Woohooo!
Teamwork. Kenny and new friends Robin and Rob get some time to talk about the day, and how the food tasted!
The monster trophies. Waiting for the awards.
Andy and his plaque for 6th place brisket!! Still lots of packing up to do as the sun goes down.
This truck really put on a show. The blur of the jet powered truck taking off for its 214 mph quarter mile run!!
Nobil? For the ride home, we decided agaist I-95, and took a country drive up Route 29 all the way home.
