Once again, the Dizzy Pig team packed up and headed out to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Soy beans, watermelons, lopes, millions of chickens, and flat as it gets. A nice short drive...maybe 3 hours from Northern Virginia....and we were setting up. All of the "waterfront" spaces were already occupied, but we ended up with a nice spot. A finely run contest, but the weather was ungood. The heavy rains were worst right during turn-ins and the awards, and the 50 yard dash to the stage from the canopy that people were cowering under was quite a scene. Sandy and the crew pulled off a great contest though. Unlike last year, we did not get any top ten calls to the stage, yet our consistency put us in the 12th overall spot.

Pork in the Park, Maryland State BBQ Championship

Weather aside, this growing contest had a tough lineup of good teams and made for a great weekend. Our expectations were high coming in as last years champions, but as luck would have it we did not get any calls to the stage this time. We felt like we turned in some really good food, but as we know first hand, you have to expect days like this! Even with "middle-of-the-pack" finishes in all 4 categories, we were fortunate enough to find enough consistency to get well into the top fourth with our overall score. Keep on pluggin!!

Congrats to IQue on their big Grand Championship finish.

Once again on the road. Always fun to see how they are coming on this modern high-tech Woodrow Wilson Bridge project. Just as high-tech, while a little less modern, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is always a joy to cross. See that flat piece of land on the other side?? That is the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Our goal!
There are lots of very important items we need to bring in order to be well-equipped at a BBQ competition. This was our last stop. While quite humid, the weather was fine while we set up our camp.
Our allies, The BBQ Guru folks, set up nearby. Not only are these guys very good cooks, they offer some really neat gizmos to control our pit temperatures so we can get a few hours sleep. Another close friend, Brett Brown of Free Range BBQ displays a fine chunk o' chest he is fixin to trim up!
Ford Allison of the Great Lakes BBQ and Feed Company came all the way out from the mid west to compete at this fine event. Always good to see his smiling face. Andy "Nighthelp" Stoddard, now a key Dizzy Pig manager, gets ready to coat a big Maryland striper with Raging RIver rub. Dang it was tasty.
Sea Bass and BBQ Bob show off that BBQ Guru team spirit. If you ever end up at a contest where these fellows are cookin, you better be on your game! Tuffy and gang take competing seriously, and their experience shows with a long line of awards.
Speaking of tough teams, our friends with the Lunch Meat BBQ team come out swingin every time! We cooked next to this team last year, and this year was their second contest ever. Nice folks, and while they didn't score too well, they had the time of their lives and actually cooked up some dang good food.
Chuck makes some sausage patties from some home made sausage Chris made up. When we don't have John with us, someone else has to put together the lettuce boxes. Chris struggles on the first one. We can get by, but they sure look nicer when John is there!
Chuck puts some love on the ribs. Knife is all sharpened, and Kenny gets ready to get into slicing the brisket.
It rained off and on through the weekend, and right about turn in time the skies really opened up. The Cool Smoke team blurred by the pouring rain. Always good seeing these guys, and for the first time we got to cook next door.
Red Todd, wife and pup. Red cooks on the Pennsylvania Posse team, and is a great guy to know. The award ceremony. See the stage in the right-center, all the way in the back behind the black trailer? That's where people ran through pouring rain to get their trophies. Wild scene. We stayed dry with no calls! There is a good side to losing.
Our new friends Jason and Dan from 3 Eyz BBQ are a new team with a huge passion for cooking good Q. They ended up with a 1st place in the Chicken category using Dizzy Pig rub. Brett and Max of Free Range display the hardware they earned!
