This was our first time in Asbury Park, and our first time at an Arlie Bragg contest. He puts on a great gig, and it turned out to be an incredible weekend. Good weather blessed us, and even though the town of Asbury Park looked like a war zone, it turned out to be a very interesting town with great people! We cooked up what we thought was some great BBQ, and things went really smoothly. We got some time to hang out at the Tiki Bar, right on the beach, and we got to party with some good friends and meet quite a few new ones. The big surprise came at the award ceremony. They called the top 5 teams in each category, and we got one call up for 2nd place ribs....that was all. Two other teams (Front Street Smokehouse and Ribs Within) received three top five calls, and three teams (BBQ Guru, The Anchormen and Lost Nation) each got 2 callups. Our friends at The BBQ Guru were called up for Reserve Grand Champs, and we started wondering if it would be Front Street or Ribs Within for Grand. Maybe The Anchormen or Lost Nation?? Then the call came....Grand Champion......Dizzy Pig!!! A hell of a surprise, and our jaws dropped. Turns out consistency made the day with all four entries in the top ten. Just an incredible weekend!!

Guitarbeque BBQ Cookoff, New Jersey State Championship

We'll remember this one for a while. We all had a good time, and it was wild and unexpected for our friends at the BBQ Guru to take the Reserve Champ spot. To follow that off with a Dizzy Pig Grand Championship....well, it made for a really easy ride home.

Heading North, we get to drive right through B-town. Crossing over the Susquehana is always a great view.
The Jersey countryside is far from mountainous, but it sure is pretty! Get your kicks. The long awaited Asbury Park exit!
We have a restaurant back home called China King. It's a lot different than this one! Wonder how many CHina Kings there are in the USA? The Dizzy Pig guys and the Guru guys catch up on old times.
We had plenty of room to spread out here. The streets were pretty quiet when we arrived, but that would change soon!
Our pals from Ribs WIthin getting psyched up! The Asbury Park Convention Center is a really amazing building. It's also one of the only buildings that doesn't appear to be bombed out!
Along the side of the Convention Center is a very cool bar called The Tiki Bar. From the Tiki Bar we had a great view of the beach and several run down buildings.
A few cocktails, and we were all ready to cook! Another run down, but amazing building is the old Howard Johnsons on the boardwalk. We heard it was being renovated, but nobody was there working on it.
From our table at the bar we got to watch the surf roll in. Laid back is the best way to describe the Tiki Bar.
We never got to check out the Wonder Bar, but you gotta love the look! Time to get cookin, the eggs are smokin away with the butts and briskets on.
Gettin busy. Our site from the street. The brick work on the Convention enter was unlike anything we had ever seen.
Woo Doggies gets going on our traditional chicken nad stew. First time we had seen this game, a local favorite. Very much like horseshoes, "quoits" can be played about anywhere.
The architecture and warm beach weather made for some really interesting night photos. All the teams were pretty much lined up right in front of the convention center, and the famous "Greetings From Asbury Park" lights.
Shotgun Fred, the brainchild of The BBQ Guru, passes out some of his amazing breakfast pizza. John was finally able to pull himself away from his home projects and join us. Woo is always a lot of fun to have around.
The Dizzy Pig website would not be complete without yet another picture of one of us saucing the ribs. Chuck has a special touch! Being the "Guitarbeque" contest, guitars are the theme, and the bands that played did not disappoint.
Watching our friends at BBQ Guru get called for Reserve Grand Champs was a fantastic experience! It was so nice to see their hard work pay off with their best finish ever. Shotgun still doesn't believe it.
BBQ Bob Trudnack and Rich do some bonding. Even more surprising than the Guru guys getting called for Reserve champs, was hearing our names called for the top honors. Dang were we happy.
After a long weekend, we could not bear to make the long drive home. So we stopped at Johns place in Maryland to stay for the night. Passing through Baltimore again on Sunday.
The Fort McHenry Tunnel at 60 MPH. A final glimpse of the Baltimore skyline capped off another great weekend.
