#30 New Holland Summerfest, New Holland Pennsylvania - August 2006

7th place overall / 72 teams

Chicken
35th
Ribs
2nd
Pork
17th
Brisket
20th

Now it's the 5th straight year at this most excellent event. This year there was a phenominal 72 teams, and we had our work cut out for us. As usual, thanks to Melvin, Chuck and the gang, the event ran like clockwork from start to finish.

A beautiful trophy for 2nd place ribs was our best finish, and our other finishes (17th, 20th and 35th) would have normally put a damper on our overall finish. But with 72 teams, the Dizzy Pig consistency once again set us up into the top ten overall. Speaking of consistency....for the second year straight our friend Steve, with Team Agave, came away with Grand Championship honors besting the second place team by over 17 points. Congrats Steve, Dale and George!!! We also want to extend a hearty congrats to Rich and the Lost Nation crew who pulled out a Reserve Grand Championship trophy with their 2nd place overall finish. Also worthy of congrats are our friends from these teams....Tarheel Smokers (3rd overall), Philly Pigs (4th overall), Smokey T's (5th overall), Ribs WIthin (6th overall), Shenendoah Q Crew (8th overall) and Dixie Bones (9th overall). Nice cookin guys!!

New Holland Summerfest, Pennsylvania State BBQ Championship

72 teams strong, and Melvin says that's gonna be the maximum from now on. We fully expect New Holland not to have any difficulties filling those 72 spots every year, and I expect you'll need to get your applications in early next year! The Dizzy Pig guys rate this contest among the top contests in the East.

Woo Doggies comes down from mushroom country, and he usually comes with some amazing fresh fungi! Woo also gets these amazing briskets that make Chris (and usually the judges) really, really happy.
John takes his "camp cook" duties seriously, and here he whoops up some mean chicken while Chuck holds back the drool. Longtime pal Rich Decker passes around the "Clonesickle". Coined by Darren of Smokin' Clones, it is a bottle of Gentleman Jack frozen into a block of ice. Yum.
Verus BBQ set up a really interesting cold-smoking setup with their Big Green Egg. Chris's Nephew Kenny slices up his beef entry...these amazing strip steaks with Cow Lick rub.
The row of teams over in Lost Nation territory. Matty and Doug, both on the Ribs Within team, take a break at the Dizzy Camp.
The small stage hosts a number of bands on Friday and Saturday, then, of course, the big awards ceremony! There are vendors that sell a variety of wonderful junk food. Jenna enjoys a sweet lick while everyone else works on cooking in the background.
Repeat Grand Champion, Steve Farin of Team Agave brings over some of his namesake to share with the Dizzy Pig guys. George, in the background, helped Steve win it all again for the second straight year. Tony "Lard" Tropea and Chuck "The Rock" Watson are both big parts of the Dizzy team. Here they are preparing ingredients for various social cooking projects around camp.
Chris, George and Steve catch up on some stories. Nephew Kenny, for the third straight year, wins the Grand Championship honors in the kids Q....this year in a new age group (16-18). Congrats Kenny!
Night time is the right time around camp. The warm lighting and bright smiles make for a fantastic time. Good friends Doug and Doug of Crispy Critters cooked up a storm and placed a very respectable 12th overall including a 7th in ribs.
Since a stretch of bad weather to start off the season we have been blessed with some righteous cooking weather. Brett cooked totally solo for Free Range BBQ, and while he was constantly working, he held it together and pulled out a respectable 14th place overall finish. Nice work Brettly!
Such a beautiful venue. Jenna and Kara had a great time handing out brochures for our sponsors and selling Dizzy Pig rubs and our new stickers.
We get regular opportunities to talk with the public about Big Green Eggs, The BBQ Guru and Dizzy Pig. Chuck goes over the virtues of The Egg with some interested guys. Chuck cooked our home made maple sausage for the sausage contest. It was excellent, but the judges ranked it in the middle of the pack.
Everyone on the team tries to get some time in Chris' Dad's lucky chair. Chris always gets a good rest and thinks about his late father as he loosens up for crunch time. John and Jenna have some fun while the clock ticks down to turn ins.
Chip and Matt of War Pigs did very well this year in the Whole Hog category with this beauty. Chris looks on while Kenny works his magic with the knife.
Turn ins are all done. Cheers!! After all that work there was time to check out the bikes that were being judged. Very cool Harley here.
The bike competition had several categories...."Radical" being one of them. This was a cool machine. Kara always has a good time up in New Holland. What a fantastic family event.
We had a nice lineup at the awards ceremony to cheer on our friends. Brian Junkins cooked by himself as Shenandoah Q Crew, and had a banner day in a tough competition. His cookin earned him an 8th place overall finish, just 2 points under Dizzy Pig. Here he is picking up a sixth place rib finish. He also nabbed a 9th in pork. Congrats Brian!
Only one stage call on this beautiful Saturday. And it was a good one. Dizzy Pig was 2nd in ribs!! Red and his girl started a company that makes these cool printed towels.
While Rich and crew look on, the Dizzy guys hump to move his pit. The Lost Nation Crew after receiving their Reserve Grand honors!
Rich passed out some Lost Nation tee shirts to our team while we celebrated with them. Good friend Paul Hess of Midnite Smokers and Hess's BBQ.
Rich and his Reserve GC trophy and his special bottle of Jack that he uses to try and take other teams out! Chris and Brian celebrate a special weekend of BBQ.
