West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in the US of A, and we would never miss an opportunity to head out to the mountains. Especially when we had a championship title to defend out in The Mountain State. This year there was double the teams and the weather was perfect. Like last year, Chris arrived on Friday morning with the Dizzy trailer, and the set-up, food prep, and the beginning stages of cooking was a solo effort. About 7 on Friday evening help arrived, with Kenny and Andy showing up and ready to roll! The 3 of us cooked up some nice vittles for the judges, and we were rewarded with 2 first place finishes in Pork and Brisket to hoist us to our second "repeat" grand championship of the year with 663.42 total points. Thanks to all those involved on the Snowshoe staff, and to KCBS reps Scott and Steve Grinstead for making this a great event. Congrats to Bills Grill on their first Reserve Grand Championship finish, and to Pigs on the Run (3rd) and to my partner Mike Kerslake whose 8 year old daughter Hannah led Pee Wee's BBQ to a strong 6th place overall finish! Also, special congrats to Gary's Barbecue on their first place ribs!

Blues and Brews BBQ Cookoff, West Virginia State BBQ Championship

When we can get out into our backpacking stomping grounds AND cook a BBQ contest, you can count us in! They need more teams to come, so pencil this contest in for next year if you want both beauty and a great contest! They were a little short on certified judges also, so if you are a judge you should consider this event for a great way to spend a Saturday.

Up near the top of the mountain Chris took a break to soak in the views. His Pathfinder hauls the trailer nicely, but the steep hills had the motor workin' pretty hard! Taken a few feet from our site, this picture shows why Snowshoe is such a special event. Hopefully they will double the number of teams by next year.
A high country grasshopper pays a visit to our cutting board. Mike came down with his family and it was good to see them again. Here he takes a moment with "the horse"....a classic bottle opener.
The three chef's next door. Ken, Matt and Drew are all professional chefs at the famous Greenbriar in West Virginia. Mike's daughter Hannah was the team captain. Her team did not compete as Dizzy Pig North, but "Pee Wee's BBQ". Hannah rallied her team to a strong 6th place overall finish.
Judy and Fran Fry came on strong with a 5th place overall finish including a 3rd in ribs and 5ths in both Chicken and Pork. Always good to see them. Congrats yall!! Our traditional Chicken Nad stew is always a little different, but always good!
The chefs truck on over to the turn in area with their Anything Butt entry which came in 3rd place. Yet another cool night shot during our favorite part of the contest! Once our BBQ Gurus are all set up we don't have to worry so much about cooking temps. "The Guru's Got It"!!
The fellas on Hoss's BBQ brought a Weber ranch kettle to use as a firepit. WIth night time temps in the upper 40s, the fire was pretty popular. Digital cameras are not too good with long exposures, but this 5 second image of the moon worked out pretty well. What a gorgeous night.
Hoss's famous pit made from double walled stainless dairy equipment. Mike, Denise and Hannah had a great time on their trip down from Canada.
The Dizzy Pig team cooked here! Ken and Matt of Hoss's.
They say imitation is the best flattery. Here is Andy's version of a Clonesickle....our very own for the weekend, and it was gone. The site of Gary's Barbecue. What happened to Gary??
The organizers gave each team meat to cook and we all passed our meat out to the public. Some fine lookin ribs.
Kenny keeping tabs on the cooking temps. We always have all five eggs cooking during crunch time. The crowd lined up to taste Dizzy Pig's barbecue cooked on our Big Green Eggs.
Andy and Charlie in "The Village". Hannah and Pe Wee's BBQ show off their 3rd and 4th place medals. Of course Pee Wee used only Dizzy Pig rubs on their entries!
Andy, Chris and Kenny proudly sport the two first place medals and display their very cool bone trophy. Thanks to our sponsors, Big Green Egg and The BBQ Guru for helping us win two years straight up on the mountain!
The Fry's dog, Smokey, was chasing "the stick" all day long and always wanted more. Nothing like a little ice to cool things down! Packing up sure is easier when we win. Andy has a good ol' time working the XL egg into place.
The fellas on Hoss's were disappointed with their finish (3rd from last), but they all had a great time and we ate some amazing food that these 3 chefs cooked. Kenny and Andy shoot the breeze with a new friend of ours. Jeff owns a high end mountain bike company and was a blast to hang with.
The ride home is always a blur. This turned out to be a pretty cool picture! This dusk greeted us with some lights twinkling in a small town in the valley below. What a weekend!
