#5 Pigs in the Park, Danville, Virginia - May 2004

15th place overall / 35 teams

The town of Danville reminded us of Mayberry RFD. The entire town was storybook friendly, and the organizers of this event went far out of their way to make sure the teams had everything they needed. The weather was perfect, and the park was by far the nicest spot we have competed in. I think the challenge of competing for the first time this far South, and a problem with the quality of our ribs hurt us here, but we were pleased to end up, once again, in the top half of a tough lineup.

We loved Danville. We were disappointed with our results, and for the first time found ourselves with not one top ten call to the stage. But from every other perspective it was the perfect weekend. We were perched up on the hill overlooking the beautiful park, and underneath majestic (and I mean old) hickory trees. There were a bunch of big teams cooking here, and for the first time we found ourselves as far South as we have been. What a weekend. Great to get away from the city and live a true down-home weekend in the country.

Mike and Chris arrived a day early, on Thursday, just to get time to set up and get a good night's rest. Good thing we did. What a cool place. Such a nice camp, here is another angle!
Mike made up some breakfast on the mini...after he danced with it! Mike feelin no pressure...mixing up the sauce for the Dizzy Pig Tsunami Spin crabcakes.
The butts go on early and will be all purtied up in the mornin'! Chris puts the finishing browning on the crabcakes just before the judges walk up to our camp with forks in hand!
Besides Mike telling stories, the judging table was extremely quiet as they enjoyed fresh Maryland lump crabcakes with a roasted garlic horseradish mayo sauce. First category behind us, four more for tomorrow! Mike puts on the Cow Licked brisket.
We usually cook two briskets, and here is the other one. It's a beaut! The sun sets on a busy day. Tomorrow will be even busier!
Tiime to share a few beverages and stories while the smokers chug along. Our night time view from our spot on the hill.
Mornin time! The butts look nice at a first morning glance. They have been on over 12 hours, and the Dizzy Dust Coarse has helped form a gorgeous crust.
Chicken takes a good deal of attention and interaction, unlike the other entries where you often go hours without opening the cooker. Mike and Chris pulling off and wrapping one of the briskets.
Kenny, the knife master, gets to work on the ribs. All the trophies that we didn't get!!
