A week after the Philadelphia contest was cancelled out from underneath us, we had registered for the "Smokin on the Chesapeake" competition...right in the home state of Chris and Kenny! Chris lost his father earlier this year, and this Father's Day weekend contest was dedicated to John Capell. And Dad was indeed looking down on us this day. The incredible sunrise lead to a fantastic morning of cooking and presenting our entries. Everything went smoothly, and dang if we didn't land on some good judging tables as well. Hearing our name called for the Grand Champion was very much like a dream. Very surreal.

This Father's Day weekend competition had a little of everything. Mud. Rain. Technical problems with scoring. A few issues at the awards ceremony. But then the mud got covered and dried up, the sun came out and it turned out to be a great weekend of BBQ and music. We never knew when we enjoyed the Fathers Day sunrise that we would come home with a 1st place trophy, and the weekend turned out to be more than we ever expected.

Smokin on the Chesapeake will occur again on Fathers Day weekend 2005, but this time in Westminster, Maryland. The Dizzy Pig guys will be there.

Kenny and Chris got to beautiful Kent Island a day early, and since it had been wet we picked one of the higher spots. Page came to visit and support the team. He and Chris check out the nice brisket specimen!
Kenny pumps a top secret mixture into the butts. hehe. We get the Eggs going early so we can get a good clean fire.
It was muddy when it got there, then we got even more heavy rains. It was quite a scene. Nothing like first come first serve though. We watched the mudfest from our comfy dry spot up on the hill!
Our neighbors were selling smoothies and a bunch of fried goodies next to us, and they kept us pretty well supplied with snacks...in trade for meat! One of our snacks was the traditional rib roast with Dizzy Pig Cow Lick that Kenny usually cooks up.

Eggs on the propane stove. And a killer Fathers Day sunrise greeted us on this winning day.
We decided to go with Raging River wings this time. They were good! John puts the finishing touches on the box.
What.....we won? Yes, boys. Very nice work. Very nice work!
